    Mom-O-Meter: A self-help pregnancy Android app

    The goal of this project was to develop a self-help Android application to aid pregnant women in achieving healthy weight gain during pregnancy. Using Scrum, an agile software development approach, the team gathered requirements, designed, and implemented a smartphone application utilizing the Android and Google Health platforms. This application empowers women to take their health into their own hands, and has the potential of reducing short-term and long-term health risks associated with gestational weight gain for both mother and child. This application is an example of continued advancement of mobile technologies in healthcare, which drives the shift from a reactionary to preventative treatment paradigm

    Outdoor atmospheric microplastics within the Humber region (United Kingdom): Quantification and chemical characterisation of deposited particles present

    Atmospheric microplastics (MPs) have been consistently captured within air samples on a global scale. Locations with high human activity are reported to have high MP levels. An urban sampling site in the Humber region (U.K.) has been sampled over a 13-month period, providing a seasonal variation profile of MP levels, size, shape, and polymer types that humans are exposed to. Mean MP levels, measured using passive fallout into a container, were 3055 ± 5072 MP m−2 day−1 (1164 median). An increase in levels with a decrease in MP size was observed, consisting of mainly film-shaped MPs (67%) that were polyethylene (31%) and nylon (28%) polymer types. No relationship between rainfall and MP fallout levels was observed. In parallel, MPs within five urban-ised locations relevant to human exposure were characterised over a 2-week period. An overall MP mean (and standard deviation) of 1500 ± 1279 was observed (1012 median), from which petroleum resin accounted for 32% of MP polymer type, with a higher prevalence within industrial and roadside zones. These comprised mainly fragment (52%) and film (42%) shapes, and the MPs levels increased with decreasing particle size. The results provide novel information on characterising polymer levels and types, and can inform cellular toxicity studies, investigating the consequences of human MP exposure

    Glycemic Benefits with Adherence to testosterone therapy in men with hypogonadism and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

    BACKGROUND: While previous studies have demonstrated testosterone\u27s beneficial effects on glycemic control in men with hypogonadism and Type 2 Diabetes, the extent to which these improvements are observed based on the degree of treatment adherence has been unclear. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of long-term testosterone therapy in A1C levels in men with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and hypogonadism, controlling for BMI, pre-treatment A1C, and age among different testosterone therapy adherence groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 1737 men with diabetes and hypogonadism on testosterone therapy for 5 years of data from 2008-2018, isolating A1C, lipid panels, and BMI results for analysis. Subjects were categorized into adherence groups based on quartiles of the proportion of days covered (\u3e 75% of days, 51-75% of days, 26-50% of days and 0-25% of days), with \u3e75% of days covered considered adherent to therapy. RESULTS: Pre-treatment median A1C was 6.8%. Post-treatment median A1C was 7.1%. The adherent group, \u3e75%, was the only group notable for a decrease in A1C, with a median decrease of -0.2 (p = 0.0022). BMI improvement was associated with improved post-treatment A1C (p = 0.007). When controlling for BMI, age, and pre-treatment A1C, the \u3e75% adherence group was associated with improved post-treatment A1C (p \u3c 0.001). DISCUSSION: When controlling for all studied variables, testosterone adherence was associated with improved post-treatment A1C. The higher the initial A1C at the initiation of therapy, the higher the potential for lowering the patient\u27s A1C with \u3e75% adherence. Further, all groups showed some reduction in BMI, which may indicate that testosterone therapy may affect A1C independent of weight loss. CONCLUSION: Even when controlling for improved BMI, pre-treatment A1C, and age, testosterone positively impacted glycemic control in diabetes patients with hypogonadism, with the most benefit noted in those most adherent to therapy (\u3e75%)

    Interactive single cell RNA-Seq analysis with Single Cell Toolkit (SCTK)

    I will present the Single Cell Toolkit (SCTK), an R package and interactive single cell RNA-sequencing (scRNA-Seq) analysis package that provides the first complete workflow for scRNA-Seq data analysis and visualization using a set of R functions and an interactive web interface. Users can perform analysis with modules for filtering raw results, clustering, batch correction, differential expression, pathway enrichment, and scRNA-Seq study design. The toolkit supports command line or pipeline data processing, and results can be loaded into the GUI for additional exploration and downstream analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the SCTK on multiple scRNA-seq examples, including data from mucosal-associated invariant T cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, and breast cancer tumor cells. While other scRNA-Seq analysis tools exist, the SCTK is the first fully interactive analysis toolkit for scRNA-Seq data available within the R language.NIH U01CA22041
